The New Volkswagen California Camper Van

Take a look at the new plug-in hybrid version of the classic Volkswagen California camper van.

VW are celebrating the 35th anniversary of its much sought-after California this month and to celebrate, the German firm have revealed a California Concept - with a hybrid powertrain.

This sparks a new generation for the California Camper, with the only way of leasing the vehicle currently being in a traditional 2.0 litre diesel engine. It isn't unknwon for VW to venture into the Plug-In Hybrid market with it's ancestory, the VW Multivan MPV also available as a plug-in hybrid which gets an electric range of around 30 miles.

After viewing images and features of the new generation California model, it is no surprise that VW 'bus' lovers will be hoping that the concept doesn't remain on the design table and finds its way into development.

A spokesperson at Volkswagen says: “Based on the long Multivan, the California of tomorrow is once again unique in its class. For the first time, the California Concept also offers the advantages of plug-in hybrid technology for even more flexibility and a remarkable level of comfort on the road. It is powerful, economical and stands for future-oriented and responsible mobility with its all-electric range.”

The California Concept will be unveiled properly later this month at the Caravan Salon trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany.
