F-Pace Review
“Posh saloons are out. Luxury SUVs are in. And the F-PACE is the king of kings.”
There comes a time in everyone’s life when more space is needed -- when the confines of a regular car are just too great to persevere with. For these people, the lure of the SUV is significant. But it isn’t just families who are lapping up the market. Businesspeople want cars they can melt into, and luxury SUVs have melty goodness.
We’re not talking about soft-roaders and crossovers here (which have become very popular indeed) - we’re talking about the full-fat SUVs that waft you along and insulate you from the noisy, stinking tarmacked world you cut through every day.
Such has been the progress in efficiency and driving dynamics of SUVs in recent years, some manufacturers reckon their latest models are as sporting to drive as a car with half the profile. Surely they must be having a giraffe. How could an SUV - with all the aerodynamic efficiency of a wardrobe - keep pace with, say, a sports car?
And then you get behind the wheel of a Jaguar F-PACE and your whole perception of what an SUV can do changes.
Don’t get us wrong. The F-PACE ain’t an F-TYPE. But the character, the pace, the soul of it grabs you by the scruff of the neck and rams your face into the coffee: times have changed, and you can now get an SUV that genuinely thrills you.
It starts with the steering and chassis. You notice just how sharp, direct and precise the steering is straight away. It is specially tuned for optimum feedback and control and unlike a standard system, it adapts to your input. Need to manoeuvre around a pothole? No problem, it’ll shorten the turn radius. Need to hit the apex on track? No problem, at speed it firms up and quickens. Once you don’t have it, you notice.
The chassis is of course state-of-the-art. It’s an evolution of the F-TYPE’s, engineered to eliminate body roll and stiffen under load. It responds to whatever you throw at it and when you combine that with the limitless grip delivered by the AWD system, what you have is a big car that’ll outperform stuff it could (probably) drive over. Despite that, it wafts you along with all the grace and decorum of an XJ. A brilliant virtue to have.
The engine’s are good too. There’s a 2.0 litre 250PS turbocharged Ingenium petrol engine and 2.0 litre 240PS turbocharged Ingenium diesel engine. The best engine in the range is neither of these. It’s a 3.0 litre V6 300PS twin-turbocharged diesel that’ll rocket you from 0-62 in 6.2 seconds. It delivers muscular performance throughout the rev range. The downside is it can only be had if you choose the top-spec ‘S’ or Portfolio specification.
Well, we say downside, but if you can afford the top-spec F-TYPE you really won’t be disappointed. Not only does it come with that 3.0 V6, it also gets uprated 350mm brakes, a heated windscreen, Adaptive Dynamics and Configurable Dynamics (a way for you to change the character of the car down to a tee), 20” alloys and an exclusive styling kit. It stands head and shoulders above every other trim.
A bit rich for you? Prestige, Portfolio and R-Sport trims are excellent too. They all boast what we would call a luxurious specification. And they all look the part. There’s no other SUV in the class that looks as good or drives so well.
Oh, and if you want serious, big time performance? You can now get your F-PACE with a 542bhp, 502 lb-ft supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine. It sups fuel for fun but who cares when you have that kind of power? You’ll be going too fast to see the birds drop behind you anyway. The F-PACE SVR is also the sauciest SUV we’ve ever heard with an exhaust note that makes you go “phwoaaaaar”. It’s even raspier than the Range Rover Sport SVR’s, which is dirty and quite frankly outrageous anyway.
Our verdict
The F-PACE is a triumph. Posh saloons are out. Luxury SUVs are in. And the F-PACE is the king of kings. It’s got the Mercedes GLE and Audi SQ5 in its pocket. Porsche offers the only alternative in the Macan S, but the Jag’s better. Just make sure you ignore the base engines and plump up for the 3.0 V6 or 5.0 V8 F-Pace SVR.
